A Sweet Treat: Cleveland Dessert Festival

Truer words have never been spoken. Jason Love gets me. With that, let’s get right to it. My mom, Tiffany and I attended the inaugural Cleveland Dessert Festival, held yesterday at The Madison.

Tickets were $15 and included 20-plus dessert samples and a box to carry them in. Side note: Thank goodness for Tiffany. Customers had to put together the boxes themselves. For most people, this was no problem. However, I’m not most people, and I acted as if constructing the box was like solving the Rubik’s Cube.

I thought the event was a good value. Fifteen dollars for a smorgasbord of delectable delights—that’s a deal, my friends.

Vendors at the event included Sweet Costo, Art of Sucre, Dough Rae Me, Hearth, A Heidi Cookie, Fat T’s Cookies, Nomaste Cakes, Sweet Little Things CLE, CLE Brownie Co, Smashmallow and Pop Culture CLE.

Desserts included Ho Ho cakes, salted caramel chocolates, cotton candy, cheesecake concoctions, s’mores cream puffs, confetti cupcakes, buckeye cookies, alcoholic ice pops and specialty waffles.

My favorites from the event were:

  • Fat T’s Cookies: I recommend the Cereal Killer, two fruity cereal sugar cookies held together by a cereal milk buttercream frosting.
  • A Heidi Cookie: The company offered beautifully decorated, consistent and delicious Valentine’s Day sugar cookies.
  • Cleveland Brownie Company: The winners for best dessert at the event, I was blown away by their Golden Dood, a gourmet brownie stuffed with white chocolate chips and topped with a sugar cookie.

As it was the event’s inaugural run, there are some kinks I hope can be worked out for next time.

For one, there needs to be more signage/instructions and a list of vendors. It wasn’t clear if attendees should wait in the large line that wrapped around the perimeter of the event and visit each vendor in the order they were arranged, or just go up to each table randomly. This led to long waits and lots of line cutting.

I’d recommend changing the physical layout of the event. I think tables should be arranged in more of a square so that there can be multiple lines in front of each vendor rather than one long line around the outside of the floor space.

Finally, beverages would be nice. Neither water, pop nor coffee were offered at the event.

All in all, I can’t complain too much. I got to devour chocolate with people I love in a city I love. Not bad for a random Sunday in February. Cheers!
