The Kitchen: A Welcome Addition to Independence’s Restaurant Scene

Do you believe in jinxes? At one time, a small part of me did. For instance, I used to think that Cleveland was cursed in sports. Then the Cavs won a championship. Cross that off the list.

I used to think that any restaurant on Route 21 near Fitzwater Rd. (in Brecksville) was cursed. Nothing that went in the location ever lasted. Then Burntwood Tavern opened in 2012 and, lo and behold, it’s still in business today. Cross that off the list.

A birthday lunch at The Kitchen

Similarly, growing up in Independence, a restaurant called Town Square was a staple in the city. Ever since it closed, a revolving door of restaurants have occupied the space. None have stayed in business. The latest to try—The Kitchen. I took my mom there for her birthday on Saturday.

The restaurant embraces modern-dining trends.

A common question we all face is breakfast or lunch? The Kitchen is the best of both worlds—it’s all-day brunch.

The restaurant offers the following: gluten-free and dairy-free food, all-natural meats (non-GMO and no antibiotics), cage-free eggs, and vegan and vegetarian options.

The menu is impressive, offering extensive options for breakfast and lunch. This includes house skillets, omelettes and scrambles, pancakes, waffles, French toast, burgers, sandwiches, salads and paninis.

The Kitchen sports an open, modern concept.

There are numerous standouts on the menu: red velvet pancakes with mascarpone cream, chicken and waffles with caramel sauce and stuffed French toast. Someone grab me a napkin … I’m drooling.

My mom ordered the Big BLT sandwich, which featured double-decker bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on craft toast. I had a Beyond Burger, topped with lettuce, onions and avocado, on a brioche bun.

Smiles all around. My mom’s sandwich had plenty of bacon and was complemented nicely by fresh toppings. She enjoyed the bread, which she described as thick but not overpowering. (Thick but not overpowering … sounds like me in middle school)

The Big BLT

My Beyond Burger had a nice texture and paired well with avocado. The brioche bun was fluffy with a delightful sweet and salty taste.

Believe it or not, my favorite part of the meals might have been our sides of kettle chips. The Kitchen gets creative here—after removing them from a bag, they throw the chips on a grill and season them. Absolutely delicious.

My biggest takeaway from the Kitchen is that it’s clean eating. What I mean is that I could really taste the freshness in their food—nothing seemed frozen or processed. I didn’t leave the restaurant feeling like there was a 10-pound anchor in the pit of my stomach.

The Beyond Burger

My second biggest takeaway … good value. Our total bill was $17. I’ll take that every time.

I’d describe The Kitchen’s atmosphere as a farmhouse chic modern diner. Approximately fifteen tables and a small couch occupy the space, which employs an open layout.

I may have to order this next time.

The Kitchen, open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., is located in a strip center—with CVS, Dollar Bank and the post office, among others—off Brecksville Road just south of Rockside Road. Unfortunately it’s not visible from the main road. If they’re able, I would advise the restaurant to put out a street sign so that passersby know they exist. At the very least, establish a website.

I think the Kitchen is going to break the “Town Square” curse. The owners seem to know what they’re doing, as they have other locations in Northeast Ohio and are looking to expand. More importantly, they cater to every palette, from traditional to modern. Here’s hoping they make it. Cheers!
